Description

Gwyn & Campbell 1st Model Carbine, SN 3159

Presented here is a scarce Type I Gwyn & Campbell carbine, also known as the 'Grapevine Carbine" in very good overall condition. One of some 4,200 carbines produced, the .52 caliber, percussion breech-loading carbine was the invention of businessmen Edward Gwyn and partner Abner C. Campbell, both of Hamilton, Ohio. The Gwyn & Campbell Type 1 is the more scarce of the later Type 2 style most often encountered in the collecting field. The U.S. Ordnance Dept. granted over a dozen contracts to Gwyn & Campbell for a total of 8,202 carbines of both types. A number of Federal cavalry units were armed with the G&C carbine and included the 3rd Wisconsin; 2nd and 3rd Iowa; 2nd & 3rd Arkansas; 5th and 8th Ohio; 5th, 6th and 16th Illinois along with other Civil War units. Carbine is a single shot, falling-block action piece mated to a 20" round barrel that has a 3" long octagonal section at the breech. This specimen exhibits all iron mountings and has faint traces of case colors on the receiver. Hammer has a flat back with a beveled edge and a lever that is long and serpentine in shape. Lever locks into a long trigger-like spur inside the bottom loop of the lever. Gunmetal exhibits areas of fine, light pitting over the frame, lockplate barrel and buttplate. Marching serial numbers (#3159) stamped on underside of barrel, receiver and loading lever. Weapon is stamped with maker's mark of "GWYN & CAMPBELL / PATENT / 1862 / HAMILTON, O." on the lockplate. Stamping very good overall but the word 'Campbell is thin. Weapon stamped "UNION / RIFLE" on the obverse side of the frame beneath the nipple area. The long base rear sight sits on the octagon frame and has an adjustable leaf to reach out to 900 yards Carbine exhibits strong mechanics and is fitted with a sling bar and sling ring. A weak, single inspector cartouche stamped on left side of stock above the lever. All screw heads in great condition. Wood stock good and appears untouched with light dings and dents from use and storage. This Gwyn & Campbell Type 1 carbine is a fine, scarce cavalry arm of the Civil War.
