M1816 Remington Maynard Tape Primer Conversion Rifled Musket, dated 1857

This rifled musket started out life as a M1816 flintlock smoothbore musket. With the development of the Minnie Ball in 1850 and the adoption of the Maynard tape primer system in 1855 alterations to update older muskets were undertaken. Frankford Arsenal performed alterations for the US government while Remington supplied the locks and breech plugs. The alteration process started in 1856 and by 1859 20,000 muskets were altered, of which only 13,189 had rear sights installed, and only 4,000 had the Maynard Tape Priming system. The conversion process consisted of sawing off the old breech and fitting a new breech with a percussion bolster. The barrel was rifled and a new lock was added with the Maynard primer system.

The barrel surface does show signs of a medium to heavy grade form of pitting in and around the breech and touch hole area, but diminishes significantly along the length of the barrel. The ramrod is original to this weapon with the button head designed for the round ball and threading at the opposite end for the ball pull and worm. Barrel proof mark has been obscured by pitting yet the date "1857" is visible. Address line "REMINGTON/ILION NY/1857/U.S." is visible on the lockplate. The walnut stock is solid and in excellent condition, considering its age, with inspector cartouche on the flat opposite the lockplate. There are scratches and some surface nicks, but no cracks to the wrist area. A wonderful pre-war musket that likely saw extensive use during the American Civil War.
