This is a reproduction of the 1862-patented eagle button (patent number 36,933 - 'Garments, spring hooks for fastening'), spring hook on back for securing the poncho or gum blanket.
The button was made with a long spring shank and was designed to go through the grommets on issue rubber blankets so the sides could be connected and the whole thing worn as a poncho in rainy weather. They were originally patented by Abel Putnam Jr. on November11, 1862.
Original Cap Pouch with Poncho Hook attached for safe keeping.
