In 1833 the U.S. Army's Mounted Rifles 1st Cavalry became commonly known as the "Dragoons", the first of many "Dragoon" units established in the United States. Developed in 1848, the Colt Dragoon was initially issued in pairs for "Dragoon" service. The massive revolver was introduced to rectify a number of defects found in the even larger Colt Walker revolver which were discovered in active service during the Mexican War. The three models of Dragoon Revolvers went on to see considerable civilian service during the 1850s and '60s, and was used during the Civil War. 1st Model - about 7,000 models - Square Trigger Guard with oval shaped notch on cylinder; 2nd model about 2,700 models - square trigger guard with rectangular shaped notch on cylinder; 3rd Model - about 10,500 models - Round Trigger Guard with rectangular shaped notch on cylinder.
