Enlisted hat brass, 1858 (standard infantry, cavalry & artillery). U.S. Regulations (1861) state The insignia of corps, in brass, in front of the hat, corresponding with those prescribed for officers (artillery crossed cannon; cavalry sabres crossed, edges up; infantry bugle), with the number of the regiment, five-eights of an inch long, in brass, and letter of company, one inch, in brass, arranged over insignia.
