He saw that if the North could damage the South's ability and willingness to make war, the duration of the conflict could be substantially reduced. Sherman proved to be very successful at this, though ironically, forces led by "Uncle Billy" did not win any major battles. They did, however, win campaigns because of Sherman's determination, insight and strategic genius, and went on to make a tremendous contribution towards ending the war.
