M1908 Haversack

In 1908, the M1904 haversack was reevaluated and the design slightly changed. The haversack, now designated as the M1908 was slightly smaller than the M1904. Also the two wire hooks on the back were replaced by two spring hooks.

This haversack, manufactured by the Rock Island Arsenal between 1908 and 1915, was issued to soldiers during World War I. The outer flap is triple marked with three separate units, as some haversacks were reissued to new owners. The silvery stamp has crossed light artillery canons, a "109", "D", "26" and "77". Underneath the first set of stamps are crossed light artillery canons, marked with "3", "D", "PA" for Pennsylvania, and possibly "97". The third layer of stamps are crossed infantry rifles and a "K". The inner flap is stamped with "Rock Island Arsenal" but the date is illegible. The initials "TRW" are hand-written on the back of the haversack, possibly belonging to the original owner.
