Original M1842 Harpers Ferry Smoothbore Musket, dated 1847 This smoothbore musket, which is in very good condition, is a .69 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader made in Harpers Ferry Armory in Virginia. Dark walnut wood has typical wear patterns expected from its war-time service. The lockplate surface, barrel and barrel bands are a light grey to bright patina with some pitting. Lockplate markings are the standard for the armory, eagle motif with "HARPERS FERRY" underneath and "1847" before the hammer. Barrel markings shows sharp, distinct proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” on the barrel breech facet and a portion of the matching date “18--” on the barrel tang. The buttplate is marked “US”. The M1842 was manufactured from 1844 to 1845 and one of the first percussion muskets to be manufactured at the national armories and the last smoothbore produced as a primary military firearms.
