M1816 H&P Conversion Springfield Musket by N. Starr, 1862 Smoothbore

This is an very nice example of a mid production M1816 flintlock Musket. The M1816 Musket was the primary infantry long arm during the Mexican War and many muskets, such as this one, were converted to percussion. This musket has minor evidence of cleaning on the lockplate and triggerguard yet the wood is untouched. In fact, this is likely one of the VERY FEW muskets that were converted yet the barrel was not rifled, even after the addition of a front and rear sight.

This specific musket has the lock plate marked "MIDDTN / CONN / 183X (2 or 3?)" and "US / sunburst / N. STARR" in three vertical lines fore of the hammer. The interior of the lockplate, and all the mechanical parts, still retain their original bluing. The barrel tang is dated "1832", with the old date "1" cut off by the conversion. The barrel was not proofed, further evidence that this musket conversion was likely never completed by the arsenal. Rear two-leaf sight still retain almost all of its bluing. The stock retains its inspector cartouche opposite the lockplate and has another cartouche located just forward of the butt plate. Stock is the correct full length military version. The buttplate tang is marked "US". It has an iron trumpet head ramrod.
