Description

18th Century Card Deck (European)

These European-style playing cards are perfect for any re-enactor reprising a role throughout the mid to late-18th Century and early-19th Century. As per English law, the Ace of Spades displays an embellished design and manufacturer's logo. Under the reign of James I of England, an insignia was required on the Ace of Spades as proof of payment of a tax on local manufacture of cards. Until August 4, 1960, decks of playing cards printed and sold in the United Kingdom were liable to tax under the Stamp Act of 1765, and the Ace of Spades carried an indication of the name of the printer and the fact that the tax had been paid.

As per historical design, the backs of the cards are left blank as card backs were undecorated until after 1850.
